What if AI managed your Gmail filters? Free AI courses. David on Hulu
Plus, things that terrify the folks at the National Archives, fun Dall-E 3 T-shirt tricks, and Cities: Skylines 2 is out.
I’m David Gewirtz. Welcome to this week’s Advanced Geekery newsletter. This is an exciting issue. Let’s dive in.
My articles
Let’s kick it off with a quick recap of the articles I published in the last week on ZDNET:
More fun with DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT: Can it design a T-shirt? I tried talking DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT into making a ZDNET-themed T-shirt with a retro robot design. Oh, the places we went together! Come along and see for yourself.
I took this free AI course for developers in one weekend and highly recommend it: These 13 free AI courses, from OpenAI and DeepLearning, range from beginner to intermediate, and did we mention they're free?
The AI I want to see in the world: 5 ways it could manage my Gmail inbox for me: Email filters are so 2004. Imagine a Gmail where AI not only manages but also sorts and summarizes your messages. Here's how my AI assistant could serve as a true collaborator.
I’m on Hulu this month
Looks like younger me is on Hulu this month. If you get a chance, stream The President’s Book of Secrets. I think you’ll enjoy it.
If you’d like the insider details about what it was like for me to be part of this show, I write a behind-the-scenes piece for ZDNET when the show was first broadcast.
I was flown up to the Waldorf Astoria building in New York City, where the show was filmed. My big takeaway? The Waldorf Salad (yes, I had to order one) was not much more than fancy coleslaw:
I’m telling you. Stick with me folks. If there’s information you gotta know, I’m going to share it with you. It’s what I do. :)
Must-watch YouTube
Moving on, let’s queue up some interesting YouTube videos for your entertainment and edification.
In honor of Halloween, the United Stated National archive released its list of Ten Things That Terrify Archivists!
Cities: Skylines 2 came out this week. This cute skit pretty much sums it up. And yes, it’s what I’m playing. I’ll get back to Starfield eventually.
I haven’t shared a Mandalorian musical number for weeks. This time, it’s the Mandalorian done in 80s retro synth.
Interesting reads
Here’s some good stuff from around the Internet, well worth reading.
I love this story. Apparently, there once was a time that the US Government actually cared about science. Apparently, according to Collider, a sci-fi movie screwed up its science so bad, the government intervened.
Proof that coffee drinking is good for me (and you), according to science. Tea, too, they say.
More clicky
I’ve got a lot happening all over the web. Here are links to my various stuff:
House of the Head: home for my published music
ZATZ Labs: where I host my published software projects
Feel free to dig around, visit, and say hey!
Reader projects
I’d like to regularly spotlight a reader project or two here. If you have a photogenic reader project, send an email to me at david@zatz.com with the subject “READER PROJECT,” a few pictures, and a short one-paragraph description. If you have a social media link or a link to the project, include that, too.
Leave some comments
Substack supports comments, so feel free to leave some. I promise to read them. Just, please, let’s keep our personal politics out of any discussion.
That should do it for this week. This newsletter is really starting to pick up subscribers. Please help it out by sharing links on all your socials.
Have a great week!
