Install a VPN on Vision Pro, Gemini's Code Assist, and killing the Apple Car
Plus, Quark explains DS9, what if Bach wrote the Star Wars cantina song, LinkIn premium features, and a tech trivia challenge
I’m David Gewirtz. Welcome to this week’s Advanced Geekery newsletter. It’s been an exciting week. Let’s dive in.
My articles
Let’s kick it off with a quick recap of the articles I published in the last week on ZDNET.
Google unveils Gemini Code Assist and I'm cautiously optimistic it will help programmers: Announced at Google Next '24, Gemini Code Assist promises to simplify developers' lives. But can it live up to its promise?
Installing a VPN on Apple Vision Pro: How to do it and why you should: Protect your digital footprint while exploring the XR world. We walk you through the setup step by step. First up: You should really install two apps.
Two powerful LinkedIn Premium features that may make the subscription worth it: If you sign up for LinkedIn Premium, not only do you get AI support and career services, but you also get a special button you can put on your profile and all-you-can-eat training courses.
Trivia question of the week
This week, we’re featuring a classic science fiction movie. I’ll give you a hint: it is not part of the Star Trek universe.
Additional hints:
Alexander Marcus
Edward Jellico
Thrax and Annorax
If you think you know what movie this is, and how these three hints relate to it, let us know in the comments below.
Must-watch YouTube
Moving on, let’s queue up some interesting YouTube videos for your entertainment and edification.
Bloomberg does an interesting expose on just how badly Apple bungled the whole Apple Car project. Somehow, I don’t think Steve Jobs would have allowed this.
Quark (Armin Shimerman) explains Deep Space 9.
Our musical number this week showcases a guy imagining what the Star Wars Cantina Band song would be like if Bach wrote it. This is three minutes of awesome!
Interesting reads
And now, some good stuff from around the Internet, well worth reading.
This is exactly the price/performance curve that everyone is worried about when it comes to using AI to replace writers, artists, designers, coders, etc.
The Vision Pro can be very uncomfortable, but it can also be quite an experience. I once saw Cirque du Soleil in person. The seating was incredibly uncomfortable, but the extravaganza was spectacular. Sometimes we do uncomfortable to see spectacular. I think the Vision Pro is like that.
This is an important discussion. I have a SawStop and, even so, my table saw scares the heck out of me.
Reader projects
I’d like to regularly spotlight a reader project or two here. Your project doesn’t have to be a big Kickstarter launch. If you’ve built something cool, it has some pretty pictures, and you’re proud of it, I might be able to share it here.
If you have a photogenic reader project, send an email to me at david@zatz.com with the subject “READER PROJECT,” a few pictures, and a short one-paragraph description. If you have a social media link or a link to the project, include that, too.
More clicky
I’ve got a lot happening all over the web. Here are links to my various stuff:
House of the Head: home for my published music
ZATZ Labs: where I host my published software projects
Feel free to dig around, visit, and say hey!
Leave some comments
Substack supports comments, so feel free to leave some. I promise to read them. Just, please, let’s keep our personal politics out of any discussion.
That should do it for this week. This newsletter is really starting to pick up subscribers. Please help it out by sharing links on all your socials.
Have a great week!
