Choosing Quest 3 memory and how CoPilot failed my coding tests
Plus, Disney reinvents walking, a very big cat, Congress changing table saw rules, and a Palm OS retrospective
I’m David Gewirtz. Welcome to this week’s Advanced Geekery newsletter. It’s been an exciting week. Let’s dive in.
My articles
Let’s kick it off with a quick recap of the articles I published in the last week on ZDNET.
Yikes! Microsoft Copilot failed every single one of my coding tests: I ran Microsoft Copilot against Meta AI, Code Llama, Gemini Advanced, and ChatGPT. It managed to get every test wrong. That's some kind of record or something.
Meta Quest 3: Is 128GB enough, or should you get the 512GB version? You can save money buying the smaller storage model, but there are some compelling reasons to spend the extra $150 for four times more storage. Here's how to decide.
Must-watch YouTube
Moving on, let’s queue up some interesting YouTube videos for your entertainment and edification.
Marques Brownlee takes a look at Disney’s walk-in-place 360-degree treadmill. It, plus VR headsets, may be the start of a holodeck — or a bad slip and fall accident waiting to happen.
There’s some movement in Congress to outlaw table saws without SawStop-like breaking technology. Here’s a good analysis.
For our geeky musical number of the week, here’s The Mandalorian done in big band style.
Both my EPs are now streaming
Available on all your favorite streaming services.
Interesting reads
And now, some good stuff from around the Internet, well worth reading.
I love this. There’s a chance it’s faked, but more likely it’s a real picture of a very real big cat being adorable. I want to believe.
This writer talks about how the Vision Pro isolates her from her partner. I agree it can be isolating, but that isolation works well to put me in a personal bubble when my wife’s in a meeting in our family room/shared office.
For any of you who were around during the PalmPilot/Palm, Inc. days, this retrospective will warm your hearts.
Reader projects
I’d like to regularly spotlight a reader project or two here. Your project doesn’t have to be a big Kickstarter launch. If you’ve built something cool, it has some pretty pictures, and you’re proud of it, I might be able to share it here.
If you have a photogenic reader project, send an email to me at david@zatz.com with the subject “READER PROJECT,” a few pictures, and a short one-paragraph description. If you have a social media link or a link to the project, include that, too.
More clicky
I’ve got a lot happening all over the web. Here are links to my various stuff:
House of the Head: home for my published music
ZATZ Labs: where I host my published software projects
Feel free to dig around, visit, and say hey!
Leave some comments
Substack supports comments, so feel free to leave some. I promise to read them. Just, please, let’s keep our personal politics out of any discussion.
That should do it for this week. This newsletter is really starting to pick up subscribers. Please help it out by sharing links on all your socials.
Have a great week!
