AI checkers, AI engineering, AI code forensics, and AI hype
Plus, what programming languages are popular with employers, mocking Cybertruck, and more
I’m David Gewirtz. Welcome to this week’s Advanced Geekery newsletter. It’s been an exciting week. Let’s dive in.
My articles
Let’s kick it off with a quick recap of the articles I published in the last week on ZDNET. This has been a big article week.
How do AI checkers actually work? AI-generated content detectors are the new gatekeepers of originality, and they're getting harder to beat. Here's how they analyze text for patterns, meaning, and context to flag AI-generated content.
What Gartner's 2024 hype cycle forecast tells us about the future of AI (and other tech): Is your favorite emerging tech about to explode - or fizzle out? Gartner's hype cycle offers crucial insights into the future of AI, developer tools, and security. See what's coming tomorrow.
AI Engineering: The next frontier for research and technological advances: How this new discipline is driving efficiency, innovation, and safety in everything from manufacturing to infrastructure.
How I used ChatGPT to scan 170k lines of code in seconds and save me hours of detective work: Writing this article about the problem I solved took me a few hours. The actual AI analysis process, from start to finish, took me less than 10 minutes. That's some serious productivity right there.
Want a programming job? Make sure you learn these three languages: The 2024 IEEE Spectrum Top Programming Languages report is out. We've seen some movement at the top of the jobs list that you should know about. A few fell off the list, too.
Must-watch YouTube
Moving on, let’s queue up some interesting YouTube videos for your entertainment and edification.
I’ve mentioned Drew Fisher before. He has a woodworking YouTube channel that I particularly enjoy. Unfortunately, his channel got hacked. Here’s his story about what happened, and how he recovered from it all. Good lessons. Worth watching.
There’s no doubt this piece was entirely AI generated. That said, it’s a good introduction to PCTG as a 3D printing filament.
Lewis Black is decidedly not AI generated as he mocks Elon Musk, Cybertrucks, and the Baldwins. Warning: there’s profanity and many disturbing statements and comments. In other words, it’s classic Lewis Black, and we love him for it.
Interesting reads
And now, some good stuff from around the Internet, well worth reading.
Fascinating analysis of Jamestown, Virginia burial excavations.
Who’s making money from Da Vinci in the 21st century?
Why did this ancient American city disappear?
Send in your projects
I’d like to regularly spotlight a reader project or two here. Your project doesn’t have to be a big Kickstarter launch. If you’ve built something cool, it has some pretty pictures, and you’re proud of it, I might be able to share it here.
If you have a photogenic reader project, send an email to me at david@zatz.com with the subject “READER PROJECT,” a few pictures, and a short one-paragraph description. If you have a social media link or a link to the project, include that, too.
Both my EPs are now streaming
Available on all your favorite streaming services.
More clicky
I’ve got a lot happening all over the web. Here are links to my various stuff:
House of the Head: home for my published music
ZATZ Labs: where I host my published software projects
Feel free to dig around, visit, and say hey!
Leave some comments
Substack supports comments, so feel free to leave some. I promise to read them. Just, please, let’s keep our personal politics out of any discussion.
That should do it for this week. This newsletter is really starting to pick up subscribers. Please help it out by sharing links on all your socials.
Have a great week!
